Forty of the SEMA show's finest street car show vehicles compete in a series of challenges to determine America's top street car.
Every year in November, the hottest show vehicles in the world make their way to Las Vegas to be featured at the SEMA Show, the leading specialty automotive trade event.
For the third year in a row, 50 of the most highly-modified, pristine and street-legal vehicles shown at SEMA were selected by a panel of industry experts to compete in the OPTIMA Batteries Ultimate Street Car Invitational (OUSCI), presented by K&N Filters and MagnaFlow.
This exclusive media event, held immediately following the close of the SEMA Show, takes place in Pahrump, Nevada and will once again be nationally televised, premiering on SPEED™.
This one-hour action-packed broadcast brings viewers an insider look into an event that takes a variety of industry-leading vehicles, from both import and domestic manufacturers, and puts them to the test through a series of performance and design events, in order to crown the 2010 OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car.

EVOLUTION - DESIGN - RACING HOT RODDING
Notable for its streamlined style and deco details, the '40 Ford has gained in popularity among today's classic car nostalgists and hot rodders who remember the models as monsters of the drag strip and as affordable first cars or hot rod platforms of their youth.
In this illustrated history of the '40 Ford, auto historian Joe Cabadas delves into the archive of The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan, to offer a complete history of the 1940 Ford: the design and production process that led to the car; the various body styles; motorsports (both circle-track and drag racing); and hot rodding.
Sidebars feature prominent, key figures within Ford, the cars in popular culture, significant contemporary automobiles from competitors, and more. Two hundred rare photographs and illustrations from the collections of The Henry Ford and from photographers around the country marvelously illustrate the iconic automobile. Hardcover, 160 Pages
Michael Gough, the British actor best known for playing Bruce Wayne's butler Alfred in a series of Batman movies, has passed away at the age of 94.
Gough appeared in more than 150 movies and television shows, including British science-fiction show "Doctor Who," and recently voiced characters in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" and "Corpse Bride."
But he remains best remembered for his role as Alfred Pennyworth in the Batman franchise, opposite three different Batmans: Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney.
The veteran actor died at home in England, surrounded by family, his ex-wife Anneke Wills said through her agent.
Wills, who herself starred in the "Dr. Who," said in an obituary posted on its website: "As his body was deteriorating this week, he said that he wanted to hang on for St. Patrick's Day. And he did, just. In the end ... there is only love."
Gough starred in "Batman Returns," directed by Burton in 1992, and "Batman Forever" in 1995 and "Batman and Robin" in 1997, both by Joel Schumacher.
Gough's breakthrough in the Alfred role has been carried over effectively with Michael Caine's rendition of the character in the current series. So, next year, when we experience that version one more time in The Dark Knight Rises, some props definitely need to go out to the late Michael Gough. R.I.P.

Nostalgia Nationals Saturday Afternoon

October 16, 2010
It's mid afternoon Saturday here at the 3rd Nostalgia Nationals and action has been hot & heavy on the drag strip all day. We just finished running the 1/8th mile Street Rod/Hot Rod Shootout which featured a record 17 entries! The race is a special 1/8th mile heads up, run-what-ya-brung drag race for car show participants only - no race cars allowed!
This head-on street shot is Brian driving down U.S 465 in Indiana during the Goodguys Hot Rod of the Year Competition in 2009. Later that day, the 32 was the quickest and fastest car on the 1/8th mile against 40 other Hot Rods.
The Street Rod Shootout featured heart break for Indy winner Roger Burman but sheer unadulterated joy for Sacramento, California's Brian Basquez. Basquez's journey to Kentucky began last Wednesday evening.
"I was sitting at my home in Sacramento on the fence asking myself if I should go or not," he said. "That's when I just said - heck with it - I'm goin!" He went to U-Haul, rented a car dolly, hooked up his Brizio-Built black '32 Ford roadster behind his pickup and drove straight through here to Bowling Green stopping for just a few hours at night to sleep in his truck. He arrived here just this morning!
At the onset of eliminations it appeared Burman and his wicked black '32 5-window were going to Waltz to the victory. Burman was some 7/10th's of a second faster than Basquez but as it turned out, Burman had to be shut off on the starting line due to a leak in his semi final race with Bill Reeves. That left a bye run for Basquez into his first-ever final. He'd run a career best 6.851 @ 103.41 in the semi's but that wasn't going to cut it against Burman but he caught his lucky break when Burman broke. The racing God's indeed had smiled upon him! In the final, Basquez dispatched Reeves with a 7.255 @ 86.92 to the loser's 8.719 @ 79.08. "That's racin' he said," fists pumping in the air upon pulling into the winner's circle to collect his first Goodguys hemi trophy. "This is the 3rd time I've competed in the event and have driven back to Indy twice and now to Kentucky. I'm so happy!"
He went on to thank Roy Brizio for building him the roadster, Roseville Rod & Custom for installing the 427-inch Smeding Performance small block Chevy and John "Action" Jackson for helping him with travel arrangements over the years to get back to the Midwest to compete in the Shootout. He then promptly accepted his first Goodguys hemi trophy, packed up his things and started the 2,248 mile journey back to Sacramento!

MARY CAHAL PASSES

Mary Cahal, 83 of Valley Springs, CA, passed away on Monday, March 7, 2011.
Mary is the wife of Dave Cahal, the NSRA's Southwest Division Director. They had just celebrated 50 years together. Dave and Mary are 25 year members of the National Street Rod Association. You could always find Mary's smiling face at the registration table for the NSRA Appreciation Days in Lathrop, CA and the NSRA Golden State Nationals in Sacramento. Mary was born in 1927 in Topeka, Kansas. Dave and Mary produced 4 great kids. Mary & Dave were both honored as the Valley Springs Citizens of the Year in 2004.
She was also a member of the Over-the-Hill Gang in Sacramento, Foothill Classic Car Club, and the Cal Vintage Rods in San Jose. Mary was a one-of-a-kind Street Rod Gal, who also had a passion for the Slot Machines.
God speed Mary and don't worry, we'll take care of Dave for you ... A celebration of life is being planned for Mary in May or June.
Photo and Words courtesy Dave Cahal
We lost a beautiful lady on March 7, 2011. Mary Cahal loved working in registration at NSRA events. She worked at the Western Nationals in Bakersfield for over 20 years, and The Golden State Nationals in Sacramento for 9 years. She just loved the Street Rodders coming in and always welcomed them with such a big beautiful smile.
She shared a passion of Street Rodding with her husband Dave. They drove all over the USA and Canada in their 1929 Ford and 1940 Ford. Mary helped Dave along with Frank & Cheryl Sloup and Dwayne Harrold start the Nor Cal NSRA Appreciation Day 21 years ago. Last year they had 440 cars.
In recognition of her welcoming spirit she was awarded the Nor Cal Street Rod Lady of The Year in 1999 and honored by the NSRA Washington State Safety Team in 2003. The over The Hill Gang paid tribute to her 2004 for all she did to personify Street Rodding as a hobby.
To witness Mary flash her smile, you just knew she loved people and having a good time. But most of all she loved her family. She had four children, Tara, Tracy, Robert and Cathy. She also has five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and one more on the way.
We will miss you Mary....

Auction Pulse: A Futurliner emerges
Courtesy David Traver Adolphus - Hemmings Daily
Hemmings nearly deleted the press release from RM's Auction America about a Futurliner at the May 12-15 Auburn auction, thinking it was a display. But not only is it actually going to cross the block at the auction, we didn't even recognize it as one of the nine known GM Parade of Progress show vehicles.
It turns out it's actually one of five Futurliners once owned by Joe Bortz, who famously saved them from being chopped up into diners. He sold this and another to a California collector in the mid-Eighties, and it's been essentially unseen ever since.
It is a "known" Futurliner, although Joe says he was never able to establish a number for it, and we didn't recognize it because it's been spiffed up a little for the auction with new tires, windshield and siding. It's not running but should contain a near-complete restorable original drivetrain. Additionally, Joe says it's the most complete of all the Futurliners, with original features that no others had, and when restored could be the most authentic.

Ole lived across the Minnesota River from Clarence Bunson, whom he didn't like at all. They were yelling across the river at each other all the time.
Ole would yell to Clarence, "If I had a vay to cross dis river, I'd come ofver dere an beat you up good, ya shoor... you betcha... by golly!"
This went on for years. Finally, the state built a bridge across the river right there by their houses.
Ole's wife, Lena , says, "Now iss yer chance, Ole. Vhy doncha go over dere and beat up dat Clarence like you said you vud?"
Ole replied, "OK, by yimminy, I tink I vill do yust dat!"
Ole started for the bridge, but he saw a sign on the bridge and stopped to read it, then turned around and came back home.
Lena asked, "Vhy did you come back?"
Ole said, " Lena , I tink I changed my mind 'bout beatin' up dat Clarence. You know, vhen I yell at him from across da river he don't look so big. But dey put a sign on da bridge dat says "Clarence is 13 ft. 6 In."
