2011 RIDLER WINNER- 'SUNCAMMER' SCHEDULED TO APPEAR AT SACRAMENTO VINTAGE FORD

The Suncammer gets its name from the '56 Ford Fairlane Sunliner donor car and the Ford 427 SOHC engine, known as the Cammer.

Let's say it's the hands. The difference between the North American International Auto Show in January at Detroit's Cobo Center, and Autorama in February at Cobo, is the hands.

The auto show has well-manicured hands, soft hands, hands attached to high-powered executives and numerous public-relations people. The hands of Autorama attendees are cracked and dry, with grease under their fingernails, and those hands know the feel of a cold steel ratchet.

The hands of the workers from Steve Cook Creations in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, aren't soft. They spent more than six years building the Ridler Award-winning 1956 Ford Convertible dubbed the Suncammer, owned by Bruce and Judy Ricks of Sapulpa, Okla.

The Ridler Award is the top honor at the Detroit Autorama, and is regarded as the top hot-rod award in the United States. It's given to the best car--regardless of class--as long as Autorama is the first time the car has been shown to the public.

The Suncammer gets its name from the '56 Ford Fairlane Sunliner donor car and the Ford 427 SOHC engine, known as the Cammer. Sitting atop the Cammer engine, which was dyno tested at more than 600 hp, are two Ford Autolite four-barrel carburetors and attached is a Tremec TKO-500 transmission and a Tiger Quickchange rear axle.

"It was built to drive," Bruce Ricks said after winning the award. "That's why we put the big, bad motor in it."

The soft-top convertible Suncammer is the Ricks' fourth entry into the Detroit Autorama and their first year in the Great 8--the top eight cars at the show as chosen by the judges. The Ridler winner is selected from the Great 8.

When Bruce Ricks found the car, it was in bad shape. "The floors were nearly gone, the chassis was awful," he said. "But we didn't care. We were looking for a car to build." Ricks' team slept in two and three hour shifts in the weeks prior to the show. They sectioned and channeled the body, pancaked the hood, slumped and repeaked the fenders, leaned the A-pillar and donated the elbow grease.

The Ricks's car beat a tough field this year. Some of the other Great 8 finalists included Bruce and Toni Milyard's champagne-colored 1962 Corvette, Jim Marciniak's 1963 Buick Riviera and Kenneth Tallent's 1940 Ford called Copperhead. All of the finalists paid their share of sweat equity to compete for the 59th Ridler Award. They paid in busted knuckles and dirty fingernails. And they did it without millions of manufacturer dollars, though you wouldn't know it to look at the cars. It's the hands that tell the story.

1939 Buick wins America's Most Beautiful Street Rod Crown

Harold Wiley's big, beautiful four door '39 Buick won the Goodguys 2011 Flowmaster America's Most Beautiful Street Rod title at the 25th Goodguys West Coast Nationals in Pleasanton, CA.  The two-tone Buick got the nod over an international cast of street rods marking the first time a four door has won the America's Most Beautiful Street Rod crown.

Built by Kin-Dig-It Design in Salt Lake City the car blends traditional classic lines with a low slung modern street rod stance. The Kin-Dig-It Design team didn't alter the car's factory lines at all opting to keep it primarily stock. The factory chassis was boxed and sculpted using the latest goodies from TCI. The low stance is courtesy of a Ridetech air suspension featuring "Cool Rides" and "Shockwaves." The stylish 17-inch wheels are Intro "Smoothies" with custom retro center caps designed in house at Kin-Dig-It.

The two tone PPG paint is a mix of pearl gray and white with subtle striping. Inside the roomy cabin is a regal blend of Burl wood and micro suede - perfect for comfortable road trips. Under the long, ultra straight and smooth hood resides a LS2 Chevy V8 with a trick hand fabricated intake and hand built inlet tubes. Everything under the hood is polished and painted with all wires neatly tucked away.

EDELBROCK SELLS ITS SUSPENSION PRODUCT LINE 

Edelbrock announced the sale of their suspension product line to QA1. Founded in 1993, QA1 is the leader in performance shocks, rod ends and suspension components for motorsports, offering the most complete line of shock absorbers for the racing / performance market of any manufacturer. QA1 is also number one in rod ends for motorsports with over 5,000 part numbers and more than a million units sold annually. This acquisition by QA1 will include all manufacturing equipment, raw materials, current and future product designs as well as any existing inventory.

Resurrecting Gene Winfield's
'Bronze Coated Beauty'

For years, it was nothing more than a beat-up old 1935 Ford pickup collecting dust in an Oregon barn. From the looks of it, no one would have guessed that the old pickup that wound up in a field in Mist, Oregon, was once the original work truck of a hot rodding legend. Nor would anyone have guessed at that time that the truck would one day be restored to its original glory. Enter the team at Hatfield Restorations.

The story of the truck begins in the late 1950s when legendary rod builder Gene Winfield and his friend Rick Lefelt built the truck and painted it its signature bronze color to be shown at a San Mateo, California, car show in January 1960 to help advertise Winfield's Custom Shop. The truck was a hit, even landing an appearance in the October 1961 issue of Custom Rodder where it was called "The Bronze Coated Beauty." The truck was modified throughout the early 1960s by Winfield and was painted blue.  

In 1963,  Winfield put the truck up for sale in the classified section of Hot Rod magazine, eventually working out a trade and selling it to an Oregon man who would go on to crash the vehicle and later sell it to Don Epling in 1965. After that, the truck essentially "disappeared" for the next 43 years, sitting in Epling's barn. Winfield had no idea what had happened to his old shop truck.............

The Stroker McGurk Award

 The Stroker McGurk Award was first presented in
1978 at Merced.  

Gary Goodguy Meadors and Tom "Stroker" Medley teamed up to present a bronzed "Stroker" cap award to the event's best hi-boy roadster. Tom Medley of course was the cartoonist over at Hot Rod Magazine in the 50s and 60s and his "Stroker McGurk" character was an industry favorite for years. Each year since, the award has been given out annually.

It has been given at the
Goodguys West Coast Nationals since 1987.

The first winner was Tom Pruffer with other notable winners including Andy Brizio, Dick "Magoo" Megugorac, Ermie Immerso, Rich Guasco, Pete Eastwood, Alan Johnson.
